Artfully English: Wallpapers from Liberty
The fashion and fabric brand Liberty and the associated luxury department stores' in London's West End stand for English design in the best sense: colourful, tradition-conscious and at the same time timelessly modern. In its wallpaper collection The Modern Collector, Liberty also remains true to the high standards of artistic and craftsmanship that have made the brand famous worldwide since the 19th century.
Liberty founder Arthur Lasenby Liberty focused on proximity to arts and crafts in the 19th century. Influences from the Far East also flowed into the fabric collections and the design of home accessories and the architecture of Liberty's salesrooms. The Europe-wide influence of the then almost avant-garde designs was so great that the epoch of Art Nouveau in Italy is still called Liberty style today. Oscar Wilde, one of the most famous dandies of his time, also appreciated the department stores'. For him it was clear: "Liberty is the preferred place to stay for the art-loving customer."
Last year, Liberty already cooperated with the English paint manufacturer Farrow & Ball and developed the Liberty Collection wall and furniture colour palette together with them, which is coordinated with Liberty fabrics. Now the team of Genevieve Bennett, head of design at Liberty Interiors, has implemented its first own wallpaper collection.
The collection name The Modern Collector was not chosen by chance: 12 different designs celebrate the brand's tradition. Genevieve Bennett sums it up like this: "Liberty has always appealed to the collector's heart - people with a passion for unique pieces that last for generations. The Modern Collector is dedicated to these art lovers."
For the production of The Modern Collector, Liberty has commissioned the traditional wallpaper factory Anstey near Nottingham. There, the wallpapers are printed on high-quality, modern non-woven material, which ensures easy, contemporary workability. The printing technique is based on traditional knowledge and numerous handcrafted production steps. A highlight of The Modern Collector are therefore the surfaces, which have a luminous, exquisite look and a non-slip, traditional wallpaper feel. Glossy and matt effects are balanced with bold colours and shades and beautiful, unexpected textures. Different printing techniques are used to emphasise the respective character of the designs.
The motifs are partly based on historical Liberty fabric patterns. The designs can be used for restrained midcentury interiors as well as for colour-intensive, classic-British room concepts.
