The Babylon wallpaper collection is inspired by ancient relief work. The Belgian wallpaper label Arte International worked together with the And Max design studio, which specialises in plaster, stucco and clay, to develop the unusual, three-dimensional patterns. The result is haute couture wall design.
Artful craftsmanship and textile surfaces
All the patterns in the collection were first made by hand by French artists Frédérique and Rob Whittle from the And Max design studio. The large-format tiles were then carefully transferred to casting moulds.
During the production of the collection by Arte International, a textile relief surface is applied to a stable yet lightweight tile material. Depending on the colour, their appearance on the wall is indistinguishable from real clay tiles. In addition, the elegant, fabric-like surface creates a cosy atmosphere. In combination with the raised and lowered surface, walls designed with panels from the collection also improve the acoustic properties of the room.
From minimalist to maximalist
With its impressive craftsmanship, the collection pays homage to the cradle of civilisation in the Mesopotamia region of the Euphrates and Tigris. The wall panelling brings a luxurious exoticism to the room. This extraordinary collection can be used to realise minimalist and maximalist interior design concepts.
During the creation of the tiles, designer Rob Whittle checks the shadow play surface with the help of light.
The use of high-quality materials means that the three-dimensional effect of the original tiles is retained in the end product.
